Grand Jury Investigation

A Times-Union report in June documented dozens of meetings about public business held without public notice or written minutes and several meetings in private places, a violation of the city's ethics code. It also uncovered a deeply flawed system of notifying the public of meetings. The grand jury is now investigating the notification and documentation.

What's your reaction?

OK, so only one person has left a comment so far. I know more people are reading than that, and I know you have opinions on this stuff. Here's how you do it: Click the link below each posting where it says "0 comments" or "1 comment" and you'll go to a page where you can type your thoughts. Let's hear them.

I know they do things behind closed doors. As a former employee, my appoinment was discussed at 5:00 on a Friday, giving little notification that there was to be a meeting, and I and other councilmembers were out of town prior to a holiday weekend. Its about time they get caught. Public business was often discussed without notice and when you mentioned the "Sunshine Law" some council members would hold it against you.

Comments are overated. Keep up the great work. I am glad you are there. I hope you guys measure this model by total traffic and not "public interaction". The universe of people who care and appreciate your news will always be larger than those who can take the time to chime in their opinions. yay Jacksonville.

I would be surprised to see a guilty verdict. It's your typical "good ol boy" network down there. I believe that all the council members have broken the Sunshine Law in the past and will continue to do so in the future. It appears that all the council members are power hungry politicians and put personal agendas ahead of the good of the voters.

What happens if Council Membera are found to have violated Sunshine in a particular case? Is the action taken void - what happens?

Keep up the good work Beth!

welcome to blog-o-sphere, beth. Much respect for your efforts to cast light in dark corners.

Seems little interest and less faith that these scoundrels will be held accountable. While the extension will hopefully produce indictments, it leaves us with serveral more months of back-door deals and mismangement of our tax $$$. seems every time i read news there's a new example of COJ contempt or abuse of law.

Good job. Thanks for updating the proceedings

My reaction is that I would NEVER run for public office in this town. It is unfathomable to me that one of our council persons cannot walk down the hall, poke his/her head in to another office and say "I've got a constituent coming in at 2 who has an interesting situation...do you have time to sit in?" Then, afterward, get the feedback of my peer. Or if a constituent requested that I come by and see something in the district, I could not ask another council member or two to join me without public notice, etc. I think this potentially violates MY privacy, as a citizen, and certainly keeps any ability to seek mutual input from occurring.

What difference will it make? This is the way the City Council does things. Hell, it's the black council members against the white council members, then all of them come together, and decide how they will vote.
